The Effect of Community Participation in Reinforcing Sustainable Development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Community participation is vital for sustainable development, fostering prosperity and social cohesion. It empowers individuals to initiate positive changes, enhancing their quality of life. Key objectives include empowerment, enabling individuals and groups to influence decisions; capacity building, developing skills and resources within the community for self-reliance; social cohesion, strengthening social bonds and fostering a sense of belonging; and sustainability, ensuring that initiatives are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.Participation can be informative, consultative, decisive, or collaborative, each contributing to a holistic understanding of its impact. Effective participation is inclusive, transparent, responsive, and continuous. Motivations for community participation in Saudi Arabia include economic development, social welfare, environmental protection, and cultural preservation. Community involvement aligns with Vision 2030, aiming for economic diversification, social development, and environmental sustainability.Youth are crucial in this process, bringing innovation, energy, and technological proficiency. This study uses a descriptive survey approach to examine the role of community participation in sustainable development within Saudi Arabia, surveying 392 young Saudis. The findings indicate high engagement driven by desires for social and economic contributions, with positive impacts on education, healthcare, and social services. However, challenges like lack of awareness, limited resources, and bureaucratic obstacles persist.To enhance community participation, the study recommends strengthening education and awareness, fostering partnerships, empowering youth, and enhancing accessibility. By addressing these factors, Saudi Arabia can reinforce its commitment to sustainable development, ensuring a prosperous future for all its citizens
